Soliciting Ideas

I so love hearing from you all (my 12 or so readers) that I thought it was time to solicit some answers to the following question:

What is your favorite baked good?

Think about your favorite bakery and what they do best, or about what you always look for when you step into a new bakery. Or think about what you love to make yourself, or what you love to have made for you.

C'mon, don't be afraid...I want to hear from you!

  1. Hi savoring:
I can't commit to one favorite. However, I have a soft spot in my heart for these:
    1) Plum tart (made by my mother-in-law, no idea how to do this)
    2) Homemade Challah
    3) Popovers!
    4) Entenmann's Crumb Cake
    5) A chocolate eclair
    6) Apple pie with cheddar cheese
I haven't had some of these things in years and I miss them!!

  2. Favorite baked good? Depends on the day but I LOVE pie. I am a huge pie fan of all kinds...except cherry...not a fan of cherry.

    I also love coffee cake...mmmm

    And I'm a brownie fan...BIG brownie fan.

Okay and now I have to stop because now I want to eat a whole pie with a side of coffee cake :)

  3. Though it's not something I actually eat that often, the baked good I always look for when I go to a new bakery is an almond croissant. It was my favorite as a kid, there was a local bakery that's gone now that had the BEST ONES. Never had one as good since.

My favorite thing to bake is soda farl, a Northern Irish specialty that is slightly different than regular Irish soda bread. It's super easy and it's a great breakfast bread, have I given you the recipe before?

  4. Not in any order:
    1)A regular cheesecake with strawberries
2)Cheesecake Factory's White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle (they sell it here)
    3)Brownies
4)Tommi's chocolate cake (I love it that my husband can bake!)
5)Chocolate mud cake with vanilla ice cream (easy to make and the kids love it!)

  5. Do bagels count as baked goods? Because if not I don't have much to say - I am not a huge cookie/pastry person.
But if they do, I love a good, fresh, chewy bagel (toasted, with a ton of cream cheese). Plain or sesame seed is fine, but I also like sun-dried tomato bagels, spinach bagels, asiago bagels...

  6. I have to second a couple of people by saying Popovers and Almond Croissants... Two of my all time favs. I also love the guava and cheese pastries from the Cuban bakery Porto's in Glendale and Burbank. Actually everything I've had from there is wonderful. I've recently become a big fan of Barbari bread. This Armenian woman I work with brings the stuff to the office. She used to live in Iran so I'm not sure if it's Armenian or Iranian, but it's a flat oblong beast of a thing...1.5 feet long, maybe 8-10 inches wide and 1.5-2 inches high. It's sprinkled with sesame seeds and breaks into finger-like pieces. With feta and either watermelon or persian cucumbers...it's fantastic! I wish I could find a place that sells it around me!

  7. I love all baked goods, but when it comes to having favorite bakeries, part of the appeal is ritural. I love My Florist in VTA on a Saturday morning when I can go to Farmer's Market before or after. Their danishes are perfect. A flaky, but not chewy croissant dough; just the right amount of pastry cream; and fresh, unadulterated fruit like a handful of blueberries, some plump blackberries, slices of Meyer lemon, or apples (whatever is in season). Yummy!

  8. I like cinnamon! Cinnamon bread is my favorite. Also, homemade lemon sqaures. And chocolate drop cookies. I'm hungry now...

  9. I like fresh baked bread. We have two kinds here in PR, one that is soft all over and one that has a crunchy outside and soft inside. I LOVE when the bread is fresh and you don't even have to put butter on it.
As for sweet stuff, do you remember quesitos? the pastry that is rolled and stuffed with sweet cheese!

  10. Thanks everyone, for your ideas! Jess, do please send the soda bread recipe - I'd love to try it!
